John F. Carter is a native of Conway, Arkansas, where he graduated from Conway High School, and then the University of Central Arkansas, with a BA in Business Administration and a minor in Accounting. He started his career as a Manager Trainee with Arkla Gas, which took him to Bald Knob, Walnut Ridge, and Jonesboro. He then began a 30+ year career in the Financial Services Industry. John was a District Manager for a national life insurance company, and a Vice President of a regional life insurance company. He was also Vice President of both regional and national securities firms, and acquired several securities licenses, including three Principal licenses. John retired in 2009 as a First Vice President and Principal of a New York Stock Exchange Company. In 2010, John became Business Development Director for Past District Governor Judy Jones Sims’ company, a’TEST Consultants, Inc.
He has always been civic-minded, and has been an active member, and officer, of several different service organizations, including President of the Walnut Ridge Jaycees. In 2001, his father-in-law, Dr. James M. Sims, invited John to join the Rotary Club of Sherwood. John’s grandfather, father, and brother have also been Rotarians.
John is a multiple Paul Harris fellow. He has served his club as Secretary, Treasurer, Board member, and President, and has chaired several committees.
While President in 2006-2007, his club was named Club of the Year, and was awarded both the Governor’s Banner and Presidential Citation.
At the District level, John served as Assistant Governor from 2007-2010; District 6150 Centennial Project Treasurer; Co-Chair of the District Foundation Annual Giving Committee, and a member of the District Leadership Academy, Youth Exchange, and Grant committees. He has also been a presenter at District Conference.
John has served MAPETS as a speaker evaluator, facilitator, resource person, and member of the Board of Directors and Steering Committee.
John is married to the former Sherry Sims. She is also a member of the Rotary Club of Sherwood, and a Paul Harris Fellow. They live in North Little Rock, and have four sons. John is an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. He and Sherry are members of the First Presbyterian Church of North Little Rock in the historic Argenta district. His hobbies include canoeing, white-water rafting, reading, and family activities.
John’s passion for Rotary grew over his years of service, but reached new levels after attending his first Rotary International Convention in Salt Lake City. He is grateful to Sherwood Rotary for helping to make that possible, and believes that every Rotarian should try to attend a RI Convention.
