Historic Moments:
Women in Rotary

The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.

"My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world," said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.

The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow for the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.

The response to the decision was overwhelming: By 1990, the number of female Rotarians had skyrocketed to over 20,000.

Dear Rotarians,

October is Vocational Service Month. President John Kenny says, "Vocational Service, in Rotary means that we are committed to honest business and unassailable ethics, and that we are equally committed to using our vocational skills and advantages to help others. The idea is simple enough - but it is unique to Rotary." You as a Rotarian are an example in your community and work place. Do we just recite the "Four Way Test" or do we live it?

New to our District this year is the position of Vocational Chair. Guinn Massey of the Rotary Club of Sherwood eagerly accepted my request to serve in that position. Your club will be missing out on a wonderful opportunity if you do not contact Guinn to be one of your programs. You can contact him at gmassey@masseyandwoodcpas.com.

I have visited 40 of our 41 clubs. What a wonderful time of discovery.  I have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. I am pleased to tell you that Rotary International District 6150 is amazing and the clubs in the District are accomplishing incredible projects and good works. This is possible only because of the individual members within each club.

CLUB NEWS
The Rotary Club of Trumann is excited to announce the recent induction of 2 new members during the month of August.  We also have two other members that will be inducted for October.  I am really proud of our small club, they are working hard.  Activities have included participation with Trumann Chamber of Commerce to sell tickets for $1000 giveaway.  The winning ticket was drawn at the Annual Wild Duck Festival.  The chamber generously gives the club ½ of the proceeds on the tickets we sell.  In addition, we are planning a Breakfast with Santa, fundraising event.  This is a new activity for us that we are really excited about.  I think it will be fun and profitable as well.  The breakfast fundraiser will be planned close to the City's Christmas activities. Trumann Christmas Parade and City of Angels is set for December 10th.

Rotary Club of Lawrence County was chartered on July 1, 2009.  They have had their firs fund raiser, a chicken dinner and planning another one on October 24 at the Iron Mountain Festival.  They have given approximately $3700 to the children's shelter in town.  Their service projects include cleaning and painting at their local park in Hoxie and plan on doing the same at the park in Walnut Ridge.  The club is adopting their "rail to trails" and will be placing a bench there with a plaque "Donated by the Rotary Club of Lawrence County" for public image.  They are joining together with the local Kiwanis Club to form an advisory panel to help cub scouts in the area.  For a new club, they are going strong, and making a very positive impact in their community.

The Rotary Club of Pocahontas has been chartered since 1938.  At the end of June they had 67 members, but now have added 5 new members.  They are working hard on membership and have a great team of Board Members that is leading the way.  They were one of the sponsors of the Rotary Club of Lawrence County. They are looking to add Rotaract at Black River Technical College and Williams Baptist College, as well as explaining Interact to Pocahontas and May nard High School. Some of the service projects they have been involved with include Founder's Day, the Rock and Roll Festival, Literacy, Salvation Army, Food Bank, and Student projects as well as giving scholarships. Their fund raisers have been very successful, which helps fund their many projects.  This club is definitely "rockin and rollin" to promote Rotary in their community.

The Quad Cities Rotary Club of Sharp County was chartered May 2005.  There are currently 25 members, with some good prospects for membership.  This club won the Project of the Year last year through their distribution of disaster relief funds to the many cities, police, fire, and others.  The club continues to provide backpacks to the first graders, dictionaries to the third graders, and on September 11, the club participated in the "Together We Read" project First Lady Ginger Beebe asked the Rotary Clubs in Arkansas to participate in by reading to the six kindergarten classes at Cherokee Elementary.  A new project started by member Richard Huff is a newsletter that is send out after each meeting to all the members to keep them updated.  A new fund raiser this year will be selling water bottles at the first ever Highland Classic Basketball Tournament in the new Gym/Community building.  The club continues to expand their service programs in the quad cities, and will continue to keep the food banks full, and serve the people in the community.  The club has changed its meeting location, and now meets at Fredricks Family Restaurant in Highland on the four lane. Come by on Monday's at noon and have a great day with some great Rotarians in the Quad Cities.
