Digging through history to find out why the Rotary year starts 1 July

Rotary International News

Dollars and some good financial sense are why the Rotary year starts 1 July – at least that’s what the RI auditors said, according to 1912-13 RI President Glenn C. Mead’s report in the September 1913 issue of The Rotarian.

The auditors found that   the organization’s affairs had been managed “honestly and carefully.” Still, RI was growing and had recently become an international organization, and its needs were changing.

The secretary and treasurer needed more time to prepare, audit, and check the organization’s financial statements by the end of the   calendar year. The auditors recommended that the organization close its financial books for the year on 30 June, which was after the RI Convention. The Board of Directors agreed, and ever since, the Rotary year has begun on 1 July.

Dear Rotarians,

How could it be the middle of July already? Assuming the role of Governor for District 6150 is a tremendous honor. I am pleased to represent you in the  Rotary World.

I have visited 8 clubs in the last two weeks. I have enjoyed seeing the personalities of each club and have been encouraged by the projects, goals, and enthusiasm. Things that must be in the forefront at this time:

  • Foundation, Membership, & Vocational Seminars - August 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st.  These are at different locations around the district. Be sure that your club is represented in each of these three areas at one of these Seminars.

  • District Golf Tournament – September 14th  at Sage Meadows Golf Course in Jonesboro. Plan now to enter a team or be a  sponsor.

  • District Foundation Event – November 14th. This will be a non-event, during Foundation Month. The emphasis will be on End Polio Now one more time.

Watch the District website at www.rotary6150.org for details about the  events listed above.

Remember, “The future of Rotary is in your Hands.”  Each club is made up of “individual  Rotarians.”

AREA SPOTLIGHT
        AREA 1: AG Pam Kail

During the month of July we are highlighting Area 1 in our District. Pam Kail is the Assistant Governor for this area, which makes up Blytheville, Osceola, Paragould and Jonesboro. Three of the clubs from this area have given us a look at their club.

Rotary Club of Jonesboro
In 2005 the three Rotary clubs in Jonesboro spearheaded Jonesboro Rotary Centennial Park, a universally accessible playground which has become one of the city's most popular recreational areas. Due to the popularity of the park a second major playground feature called Fort Rotary has been added by the three clubs.  Our club has committed $100,000 to this new playground project. The Jonesboro club recently donated $40,000 to fully equip a modern dental clinic within the new Church Health Center facility so individuals who are without health insurance can receive quality dental care.  Our most recent major financial commitment is a $100,000 grant payable over the next five years to the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas to help them raise matching funds to meet a Donald W. Reynolds grant requirement to build a new Food Bank facility.  We will also be continuing our projects including Shop With A Cop, Dictionary and Thesaurus programs, dental programs, Day of Service, Badge of Honor awards (law enforcement & fire fighters), Gramling Award (community service), Golden Apple awards (educators), supporting various local and international projects and adding at least two more worthy causes to our list. Rotary Club of Osceola
We really don't have a lot to report at this time.  We have a board meeting set up next week to discuss a possible new fundraiser for the year and we are excited about this possibility.  I have been busy working on new prospect list for new members.  We are going to make a big effort to get our club back to where it should be.  I have a personal goal of adding 10 new members this year.  I believe this can be done if everyone on the committee will make it a priority.  We had s good program last week from the President and CEO of the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce, Randy Zook.  He spoke on key issues from the state that hit both economic and political issues.  We have one new member that we hope to induct in a couple of weeks.

Rotary Club of Paragould
Lindsay Worsham Haygood has been inducted into membership roster of the Paragould Rotary Club. She graduated from Greene County Tech and Crowley’s Ridge College. After graduation she worked as the Lead Teacher in a daycare center opened by her mother in Marked Tree. She has since purchased the Center Hill Child Care Center and the The Red Wagon Childcare Center.

She and her husband, Justin, have four children: Alexis 5, Addie Grace 3, Ella 18 months, and Tyson one month. She also substitute teaches at Greene County Tech in her spare time. Welcome to Lindsay Haygood.
