As I write this message, I sit in the beautiful Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. Yesterday we rode the trails at Red Rock Canyon on our mountain bikes, and then in the evening, saw Phantom of the Opera.

We agreed that it was a day we would never forget. But the day was special not only because of what we did but because of the fact that we did it together. In our years together, Karla and I have laughed together and cried together, as we have seen our children come into the world and said goodbye as some of our parents and grandparents passed away. The purchase of our first house, the violin recitals, the sleepless nights wondering if we could fulfill our duties as parents, the graduations, the marriages, and the birth of our grandchildren all come to mind. We are a team, we are partners, and we are together: we are a family.

We are in Vegas with some longtime friends with whom we have traveled for many years. Two of the men have recently lost their wives to illnesses but they came with us anyway.  Last night we saw one of them with another couple as they went to a show together. During this difficult time our friend Howard is able to be with his "extended" family as he struggles with his loss.
