Blytheville 100% Paul Harris Fellows

By Blytheville Courier News

When Rotarians from around the world visit Rotary International in Chicago suburb Evanston, Ill., they can scan the list of club names that are 100 percent Paul Harris Fellows and find the newest member - the Blytheville Rotary Club.

The Blytheville Rotary Club became 100 percent Paul Harris Fellows Thursday. Pictured are (front, from left) Rotary Assistant District Gov. Owen Lusk, District Gov. Bob Warner, newest Paul Harris Fellows Anita Parrett, Debra Smith, Mark Brasfield, Linda O'Guin and Michael Layfield; and (back, from left) Paul Harris presenters and committee members Dr. Van Parker, Allen Bush, chair Mary Gay Shipley, Mason Day, Jim McMahan and Rotary Club president Dr. Bruce Daniels.

Blytheville became the first of 39 in District 6150 to be 100 percent Paul Harris Fellows.

"That is a tribute to all of you as members and the work that you've done in the past and your diligence in  bringing in strong Rotary members," club president Dr. Bruce Daniels said. "I don't know about other districts and other states, to our knowledge  it's the first time in the history of this district that has happened to the club."

Daniels said the idea didn't just arise in the last few weeks, after District Gov. Bob Warner encouraged the club  to do so during his official visit.

Instead, he said, it goes back a few years, when previous presidents, Darrell Johnson in particular, set being 100 percent Paul Harris Fellows as a goal.

"I would like to recognize the initiative of Mary Gay Shipley and her committee took in making this a reality," Daniels said. "This is a great day for the club. We're excited on behalf of the club and also on behalf of the recipients."

Added Warner, "This is indeed a historic day for this district." Warner said Blytheville's name being inscribed on the plaque at the seven-story Rotary International building in Evanston is an incredible honor.

"Not only is it an honor for RI, but it's an honor for our district," he said. "What you have developed by reaching this true milestone in our district and in the world is you have developed a culture in supporting the Rotary Foundation. I went out on a little limb when I talked to you last time and told you,  you could do this and I'm so proud that you have. I'm going to go out on another limb to tell you that I would dare say that the next time  you induct a new member, it will be in the forefront of their mind that everyone in this room is a Paul Harris Fellow and I need to be one too."

Donna Chetister Honored - click image to view full versionIt's no wonder that one member of the Rotary Club of Jonesboro University took advantage of the opportunity The Rotary Foundation provides for donors to express their commitment to Rotary's work or to honor a friend or family member.

Rotarian Jay Clevenger and his family honored the late Donna Chetister of Jonesboro, considered the artistic force behind Winter Wonderland, one of Jonesboro's favorite holiday attractions, as a Paul Harris Fellow.

Winter Wonderland includes numerous winter and holiday scenes, which incorporates a number of animated figures including singing clocks and dancing penguins to a talking dog and animated raccoon.

Chetister, an artist who volunteered her time and talent since the attraction began in downtown Jonesboro in 1995, died in 2006.

Clevenger said that a visit to Winter Wonderland has been a family tradition that he, his wife, Deanne, and their sons Al and Seth have enjoyed together since the attraction opened in 1995. Clevenger became a  multiple Paul Harris Fellow, exercising the option to honor Donna Chetister as a Paul Harris Fellow with his Foundation recognition points.

Consider becoming a multiple Paul Harris Fellow today, and honoring someone special.

Rotary awareness
starts with you!

How many people in the community are not aware that you are in Rotary?

If you are dedicating a portion of your life to Rotary, it must have great meaning and be gratifying for you. Wouldn't you want to give others the same opportunity to feel so fulfilled? Wouldn't you be doing others a favor by talking about the benefits of your Rotary experience far and wide? There's nothing like a personal testimonial to "sell" an idea.

So, are you "selling" Rotary in
the community ? If not, you have to ask yourself why not?

Perhaps it's because members are afraid to share what we are up to, fearful that the person we are talking to may say no when it comes to asking if he or she would be interested in joining Rotary. Maybe we imagine that a negative response would embarrass us with that person for the rest of our lives.

But it's not about us! It's about the community and the world and how we - through Rotary - are making it a better place. Whether or not the person you ask joins Rotary, you have made that person more aware Rotary and aware of how it has improved you and your life. The principle has been implanted in one more person's mind. And the more we talk about it, the more awareness there is.
How many people in the community have you asked?
