During this Rotary year we encourage you to keep Literacy at the forefront of your planning.  As you know, literacy continues to be one of the areas of emphasis for Rotary International and Rotary clubs throughout the world.  Each club is asked to name a literacy chairperson and send their name and contact information to your assistant governor.

DG Dr. Bob Warner is urging all our clubs to promote literacy through projects at the local, district and international level.  Clubs are asked to contribute books to local entities on the occasion of the official DG visit.  All clubs are also encouraged to participate in Dictionary and Thesaurus distributions and to seek out other programs that will encourage literacy.

New district programs this year include the Literacy Grant Program and Imagination Library.  Details for both are on the website. There are many opportunities for successful literacy projects in each community, either as an individual club or by coordinating with other Rotary clubs or service organizations.  Purchase and read books to students, tutor, mentor, have a community-wide book drive, honor your guest speakers with a book for a library … the possibilities are endless.

September 8 is International Literacy Day and March is Rotary Literacy Month.  Plan to have programs on those two occasions that spotlight Literacy.

When you conduct literacy projects or programs take pictures and send them to us.  We’ll post them on the district web site so others can share in your success.

Thank you for your commitment to Rotary and to Literacy.
