Marilyn M. Hummelstein
Governor 2005-06

DG Marilyn's Column

I have been honored to serve as Governor during the year Rotary began its Second Century of Service.  Sam and I have made new friends and renewed some old relationships.  You truly are our ‘Family of Rotary’.

The amount of service the thirty-nine clubs in our district are providing to their communities, and those beyond, is impressive. Rotarians across our district are living the 2005-06 Rotary International Theme, SERVICE Above Self every day.  As we close the year and I reflect on the theme, I remember a comment Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar said at the beginning of the Rotary year ‘presented with the opportunity to help others in society less fortunate than I, it was not very difficult to accept such membership.  I am fully aware that, like many others, my contribution will only be a drop in the ocean.  However, as Mother Teresa said,’ We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop”.

I toast each and every one of you and look forward to continuing our Rotary friendship and service in the future.

Thank you!

RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar's 2006 RI Convention Remarks

2005-06 RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar addressed the audience during the opening ceremonies at the 2006 RI Convention.

Stenhammar, whose term ends later this month, described the progress made during his presidency to expand Rotary into other countries. Two clubs were chartered in China, and the RI Board of Directors agreed to expand Rotary into Cuba, Kosovo, Laos, and Vietnam.

Rotary needs to take a look at its rules, he said, and if they haven't been used, then they need to be eliminated. "We must adjust Rotary to the Rotarians and not Rotarians to Rotary," he said.

Turning to membership, he said he wants women to make up 52 percent of Rotary's membership, because that's the gender ratio in the worldwide population. Furthermore, he said that Rotary must increase the number of its younger members. "If we don't, in 30 years there will be no Rotary," he said.

Then talking about Rotary's role in the world, he said that it should be the same as what former United Nations Secretary-General Daj Hammarskjöld's believed the UN's role should be — not to bring humanity to heaven, but to save it from hell. "Ladies and gentlemen, let's go out and do just that," Stenhammar concluded.

Second - We still have tickets to the ballgame.

We have about 50 of our allotment of 150 tickets remaining.  This is Rotary Family Day at the Ballpark on July 16th at 1:15 PM with the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Los Angeles Dodgers.

We have Outfield Terrace Reserved tickets for $20.00 per seat in Section 430 (in the shade).  We also have Pavilion Box Seats for $30.00 per seat in Section 363.  Please promote this each week in your club meetings.

Judy Sims Inducted as Governor of District 6150 for 2006-07

DGE Judy Jones Sims, a member of the Rotary Club of North Little Rock, shared the evening with her home club's President-Elect, Lois Hargrove, as both were inducted into their new positions for the 2006-07 Rotary year.  Hosted by the Rotary Club of North Little Rock, and emceed by PE Hargrove, the evening event gave both of these dedicated Rotarians the opportunity to highlight their plans and goals for the year.

Entertainment was provided by the unmatched talents of the Rotary Club of Sherwood Singers.  This was followed by a solo by Sherwood Rotarian, Quinn Massey.   All that can be said is, if you weren't there, we are without appropriate words to describe what you missed!

To help celebrate the evening, Judy named her children as Paul Harris Fellows.  The certificates, medallions and pins were presented by PDG and Past RI Director, Carl Rosenbaum of Little Rock.

District Governor, Marilyn M. Hummelstein (2005-06) presented Judy with the traveling District Governor's Pin which has been worn by sitting District 6150 Governors for many years.  In return, Judy presented Marilyn with her Past District Governor's pin along with a gift from the district honoring her service to the district.  Judy also brought home a gift for Marilyn from the RI Convention in Copenhagen and Sweden.

Rotary Club of Jonesboro President 2005-06, Steve Baker, presented Rotary Club of North Little Rock President 2006-07 Lois Hargrove with the "Home Club of the District Governor" banner.  This banner moves each year to the home club of the sitting District Governor.

To complete the evening, DGE Judy described her goals and the goals of 2006-07 RI President Bill Boyd to "Lead the Way" as Rotary addresses the challenges of a world where millions of people are in need of clean water, food, adequate health care, literacy and a pathway out of poverty.

 Governor's Banner Update

Rotary District 6150 established goals and deadlines for clubs this year which were distributed to all club presidents during PETS in March 2005.  Now that all of the deadlines for achieving the criteria have been reached, recipient clubs will be determined.  Banners have been ordered and will be delivered to the recipient clubs within the next few weeks.  Congratulations to the clubs who have met all of these criteria.

Congratulations to all thirty-nine Rotary clubs for all of the service provided to local communities and communities around the  world.  It has been my honor to serve as your district governor during the 2005-2006 Rotary year and support your efforts to provide SERVICE Above Self.

Rotary District 6150 Centennial Grove Dedication

The dedication ceremony for the Rotary District 6150 Centennial Grove located in MacArthur Park in downtown Little Rock was held on Saturday, June 17.  Unfortunately, the weather was better for the trees than those in attendance but as chairman Barry Goldberg says, "the trees are in the ground and that is what's important".  Local media covered the event and thanks to the Rotary Club of South Little Rock, some very needy folks enjoyed a lot of left over food.
