Its been called “The Greatest Amateur Racing Event in the World,” “The Gravity Grand Prix” and many other expansive euphemisms – but the more the one million youngsters who’ve Participated, it’s simply the “Soap Box Derby.” The 5th Annual Central Arkansas Soap Box Derby returns to Little Rock on June 17th, 2006.
Since it’s beginning in 1934, the Soap Box Derby has created a rich history of making a difference in young peoples lives. The goals of the Soap Box Derby Program have not changed over its history. Those goals are to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition and the perseverance to complete a project once it has begun.
The Central Arkansas Soap Box Derby offers youngsters, ages 8-17, the chance to compete on a equal basis regardless of race, creed, social, economic or academic standing. As each child enters the Soap Box Derby program, they get a mentor and corporate sponsor. With their help, after a couple of Saturdays, the child finds himself or herself the center of attention. Poised in a car that they built, at the top of the track with their peers, watched and cheered by hundreds from throughout the community. And each of these children has just had a defining moment in their life as they are “Racing Toward the Future.”
In the spring of 2002 the Rotary Club of West Little Rock debuted a program open to every child of the correct age who wanted to compete. Each year the number of racers has increase from 25 to over 44 cars. Over 75% of the racers were children who did not have the financial means to participate on their own. Thanks to our corporate partners they raced.
