Governor's Column

August 21, 2005

Dear Diary…

What a whirlwind these last seven weeks have been! Twenty two club visits, three membership seminars, one foundation seminar, meetings with DGE Judy Sims, District Treasurer Bob Appleton and District Secretary Mark Weston. I’ve attended the makeup secretary's training, Jonesboro Metro’s membership recruitment event, GSE team leader interviews and enjoyed evenings with both the Mid America PETS steering committee and Council on Governors. I traveled to Heber Springs to meet with the golf tournament steering committee in July, then back just last week to participate. I’ve even been interviewed about the Centennial Grove project.

Thank you for your service

What I’ve learned during this time is what an incredible amount of service and financial contributions Rotary clubs are making in every community we serve. You represent several thousand volunteers in our district who are dedicated to benefit the lives of both those you know, and those you don’t… through your contributions to The Rotary Foundation. As I’ve presented several new opportunities for additional district wide projects, you’ve expressed support proving additional capacity for service. I am also constantly reminded how fortunate our district is in the quality and dedication of our leadership.

I’m looking forward to visiting with the rest of you in the next few weeks and learning more about the service your Rotary clubs are providing.

Again, thank you for allowing me this great opportunity.

September is New Generations Month.

The future of any organization is based on its ability to attract young people into its ranks.  Rotary has exciting ways to help young people develop leadership skills, integrity and an understanding of the importance of service, all of which are needed for success in life and business.  These young people will make great future Rotarians through their experiences in Interact, Rotaract, Youth Exchange, RYLA and our Ambassadorial Scholars program.

District Gets Behind Golf Tournament

The annual District 6150 Rotary Foundation Golf Tournament was held Friday, August 19 at the Red Apple Inn and Country Club.  140 golfers played in one of the largest and most successful tournaments in District 6150 history.  Comments from golfers has been very positive.

Chaired by Jack Wold, Rotary Club of Cleburne County, the first wave of 16 teams kicked off at 8:00 a.m. followed by lunch with the second wave of 19 teams starting play at 1:00 p.m.  A big THANK YOU to PDG Sam Chaffin, Rotary Club of Little Rock and DGN Bob Warner, Rotary Club of Jonesboro who headed up the effort to sign up sponsors.  Special thanks to our Corporate Sponsors and Hole Sponsors who made the day a huge success!

Congratulations to our Governor's Trophy winning team from the Rotary Club of Jonesboro and our new Foundation Trophy winners from the Rotary Club of Heber Springs.  I will be presenting trophies to these clubs in the next few weeks.

100 Years and 100 Trees
The District Centennial Grove

As the thermometer spikes over 100, it may be hard to believe that fall is just around the corner. It is, and with fall and winter will come tree-planting time—time to complete the Rotary District 6150 Centennial Grove.

“The Centennial Grove will create a lasting reminder in our capital city of the impact that 100 Years of Rotary has had—and the contribution that the clubs and Rotarians of District 6150 have made to our state,” said Barry Goldberg, who is chairing the effort.
