 Marilyn M. Hummelstein Governor 2005-06
In this issue:
Governor's Column
September 29, 2005
Sam and I attended the Rotary Zones 29 and 30 Institute in Memphis, September 21 – 25, and enjoyed meeting with Rotary leaders from the 24 districts that comprise our zones. Also present were RI President- Elect Bill Boyd and his wife Lorna from New Zealand, RI Director Bob Stuart, past and current trustees of the Rotary Foundation, past RI officers and directors, and RI and Foundation staff members. It was a very informative and inspirational meeting. Presidents elect are not the only Rotarians required to receive training. District Governors attended sessions on topics such as club visits, developing future Rotary leaders, district training, use of Assistant Governors, membership and foundation updates, district conference, youth exchange, international convention, plus time for the DGs to ‘brain-storm’ and discuss common issues.

In addition to training sessions, considerable time was allowed to discuss Hurricane Katrina and the ways Rotarians and Rotary clubs can help. The four district governors in those districts most affected by Katrina met several times with RI leaders to identify the most immediate needs, plus begin to look at long term needs. They asked that clubs continue to donate to the RI Zones 29 and 30 Katrina relief fund. The first grant from the Katrina fund is for communication equipment such as satellite phones to establish a communication network with club leaders in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. If you are interested in helping meet a specific need, continue to monitor the RI Zones 29 and 30 website www.rotaryzones29-30helps.org. There is a “Forums” section on the website where specific needs from clubs and districts will be posted.
During the Interfaith Memorial Service on Sunday morning the five youth exchange students currently in our district participated. Ours was the only district with students in attendance. Thanks to D6150 Youth Exchange Office, Don Peters, for handling the arrangements. I speak for everyone from our district in attendance when I say how proud we were of these ambassadors from District 6150. Pictures of our youth exchange students, plus additional pictures from the Institute meeting are posted on the district website.
We returned from the meetings inspired and recommitted to this wonderful organization of which we are fortunate to be a part. Thanks again for allowing me the opportunity to serve District 6150.

October is Vocational Service Month
As business leaders, Rotarians share their skills and expertise through vocational service, one of the Four Avenues of Service. Your vocational service efforts can play a vital role in improving the quality of life for those hardworking members of the community who need direction and expertise. By participating in any of a number of vocational service activities — mentoring, career days, vocational awards, business assistance, or even talking about your job at a club meeting — you can turn your experience into an invaluable resource for others.

Heber Springs Club Endows Grant
In August of this year, the Rotary Club of Heber Springs established the first fully endowed operating grant with the newly formed Cleburne County Community Foundation (CCCF). The CCCF is an affiliate of the Arkansas Community Foundation. Club President Gina Herget made the announcement on behalf of the club's board and membership. Herget said "the membership and board wanted to make a significant contribution to the Foundation. We wanted this grant to serve as a catalyst for other individuals and civic organizations in our county. This grant will serve the Cleburne County Community Foundation as a legacy of The Rotary Club of Heber Springs for generations to come. We are very excited about the future of the Foundation and the help this organization will provide for county residents."

New Member Orientation
New member orientation (or the lack there of) has a lot to do with retaining new members and getting them involved in your club. Turning Rotary club members into Rotarians doesn't just happen. A well thought out New Member Orientation process is key to a successful Membership strategy.
Rotary has some outstanding resources available to clubs to assist in this important task.
