Governor's Column

You are reading the premiere issue of The Governor's Monthly eLetter. Our goal is to use the power of e-mail  with a colorful and dynamic newsletter that provides timely information you can use. Please let me know what you think!

Rotary's Second Century

I am honored to be serving as Governor during the year Rotary begins its Second Century of Service.  I have visited eight of our thirty-nine clubs and am impressed by the amount of work that is being done in communities by dedicated Rotarians across our district.  The 2005-06 Rotary International Theme, SERVICE Above Self, alone with the Rotary Wheel Emblem take us back to Rotary's roots.  The wheel symbolizes movement and progress while our motto, SERVICE Above Self, refocuses us on one of our most important purposes.

As we enter Rotary's Second Century, refocusing on the Object of Rotary empowers all Rotarians to new levels of service to mankind.

I look forward to learning more about your club's projects and helping you achieve your objectives.

Polio - Staying the Course

Polio Eradication continues to be Rotary International's number one priority.  The RI Board of Directors have stated that "no new global projects will be started until we complete this task".  National Immunization Days (NIDS) will continue in countries where Polio is endemic or has been imported. June and PDG Jake Morse will be pleased to share their NID experience as a club program.  Contact PDG Jake.

Stenhammar's Emphases

RI President, Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar has focused all Rotary clubs and districts around the world on three primary areas of need:

  • Literacy

  • Water, Hunger, and Health

  • Public Image.

Read more about how these three areas of emphasis will be turned into action by clubs and districts.

Group Study Exchange

It's not too late to propose someone in your club for Team Leader for the 2006 exchange to District 1030 (England).  Also, please start promoting for applicants for non-Rotarian team members.

More about GSE

Interesting tidbit:

A District 1030 Rotarian, Audrey Gough, is featured in the April 2005 Rotarian (pg 21). Rotarians on an QE2 cruise aided an island hospital as a result of a unplanned encounter.

July is Literacy Month.

Literacy continues to be an emphasis for Rotary clubs around the world.  The District Dictionary Project, started last year, will continue.

June Morse is serving as District 6150 Literacy and Education Chair.  Club Presidents have received a letter from June encouraging continued participation in the District Dictionary Project.  Information was also included about a complimentary program that provides Thesauruses to 4th graders.

September 8 is International Literacy Day.  June encourages you to schedule an event such as Rotarians reading books to students, tutoring, or joining with other civic organizations for a community-wide book drive during the week of September 8.

One way to support literacy is to consider donating a book to a school or library to honor a guest speaker in lieu of a gift.

Club Semi-Annual Reports Due to RI

Club Semi-Annual Reports along with RI Dues should be submitted to Rotary International no later than July 31, 2005.  If your club's secretary did not receive the SAR form (mailed in June, 2005), please contact Alicia Pijal - alicia.pijal@rotary.org  - 847-866-3487 at RI's headquarters.  It is always a good idea to include your club number when you contact RIHQ.

Membership Seminars in August

The District 6150 Membership Seminars are scheduled--and you absolutely do not want to miss the chance to attend the session in your area!!

You will learn a lot about Rotary in general, how to develop some interesting and fun ways to recruit new members and find solutions to retention problems.

Let's work together to develop Rotarians, not just Rotary club members.  Every club should send a team to one of the seminars.

Sessions are planned for North Little Rock, Jonesboro, Heber Springs and Helena.

Rotary Foundation Seminar

The annual Rotary District 6150 Foundation Seminar will be held Saturday, August 6, in Searcy in the Heritage Banquet Center in the American Heritage Building on the Harding University Campus.

The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is “Our Foundation”. As the charitable vehicle for much of Rotary’s international service activities, the Foundation sponsors our popular and well-known programs for Ambassadorial Scholars, Group Study Exchange and several types of grants, including Matching Grants, Simplified Grants and 3-H Grants. The Foundation has also been the conduit by which Rotarians around the world have contributed over $500 million to eradicate polio.
